The Artist and Leisure Painter magazines have opened a competition with Jackson’s Art Supplies to win:

Leather pencil case which holds up to 48 pencils
Koh-I-Noor Mondeluz Coloured Pencils
Publication of the winning pictures in their summer editions.

All you have to do is create a picture in any medium of the subject ‘butterfly’ and submit it by the 2nd of May 2014. 4 winners will be notified by the 13th of May. They have also provided some reference photos if you need one.

International Artist - competition

A belated notification - but not too late to enter!


The International Artist Magazine is running a competition 'Favorite Subjects'.


Closing date 15th January


 entry £5 per picture.


They are also advertising subsequent competitions on their website https://www.internationalartist.com/competitions.


Any 2 dimensional drawing or painting medium is acceptable.  Work must be original, completed less than 2 years ago and not won any previous prize or award.  Entry is by digital image.

Judith Selcuk - Paint magzine

 Judith Selcuk sends news of an entry in the SAA magazine 'Paint' :-

I thought you may like to know that whilst flicking through my quarterly SAA magazine 'Paint' I noticed a painting that I recognised on the Gallery page entitled 'Bitter Sweet'.
On closer inspection it was no wonder I recognised it.... It was only my own CP painting that exhibited at Patchings entitled 'Escapism'
.
It was the only CP painting in the gallery and held its own amongst the other mediums.

Lesley Sharman in Artists & Illustrators

Congratulations to UKCPS Silver Signature Member, Lesley Sharman, who, with her award winning picture 'Blue Door', is featured in the December edition of Artists & Illustrators Magazine:

I've just been interviewed for A&I magazine following my win with Blue Door at the Patchings exhibition. I got a plug in for the UKCPS, so hopefully we'll get some free publicity from it.

It should hit the newsagents early November, so keep an eye out!

Lin Goodwin - Painters Online

It's always nice to get good news about members achievements.

This from Lin Goodwin:

I know you like to let people know when CP has been given some notice.

 

Well last month I decided to upload some of my work to the Painters Online gallery for 'The Artist' magazine.

 

Each month they pick a selection as 'pictures of the month'. I don't know if these go into either of their magazines, but they are anchored to the front page of the gallery on their website. They also archive them each month.

 

TWO of my paintings have been selected. One is Oil Pastel (another minority medium) But the portrait of Miss Patty's enigmatic smile is done in  Pure Coloured pencils.

Graham Brace - "The Artist" magazine

Graham Brace, one of the founder members of UKCPS,  is featured in the June edition  of  "The Artist" magazine.  In his article, Graham creates life-like close-up detailed compositions from scenes along the seashore, using Derwent Coloursoft pencils.

"I thought I would drop you a quick line to say that a drawing of mine has been selected to be featured on the Artist and Illustrators "Featured Collections" in their Animals and Wildlife Exhibition on line.
The image is of Cheza the wolf that was chosen by the public as being the best in show, in last years Annual Exhibition at Stamford".

Bev Lewis - A & I featured artist

UKCPS Silver Member, Bev Lewis, is the featured artist in the March edition of 'Artists & Illustrators' Magazine.

Bev writes:

"I was surprised and delighted to find myself as a featured artist in the Artists & Illustrators online portfolio gallery 'Portfolio Plus'. They asked if I would like to be one of their featured artists.., well would I? Of course I would.

Members in the news

A number of UKCPS members are currently appearing in current editions of art magazines.  Besides Irina Garmashova's regular coulour pencil articles in the 'Leisure Painter', both Malcolm Cudmore and Tiffany Budd have articles and examples of their work in the current edition of 'Paint', the magazine of the Society for All Artists [ known as SAA for short].

Leisure Painter - August 2011 edition

The August edition of Leisure Painter contains 3 seperate articles regarding the use of coloured pencils. 
UKCPS member, Jenny Hill, has a nice article on drawing pansies, and featuring the new Derwent 'Coloursoft Collection' tin (30 Coloursoft + accessories).  A follow-up article next month will feature the Derwent Inktense pencils and blocks.
 There is also a 'follow-me' exercise by Irina Garmashova, using Prismacolor pencils, the subject of which, a beautiful pink orchid, is prominant on the front page of the magazine.
In addition, the magzine features the start of  a new series of articles by Ros Ingram on portraiture in CP using Derwent Artists pencils.

Graham Brace - in the news

Graham Brace, UKCPS member and a well-known CP artist, is chuffed to bits at the moment, and all because he is appearing as one of ten coloured pencil artists featured in the latest edition of one of France's premier art magazines, 'Practiques des Arts'.

The March edition of the magazine is promoting coloured pencil as an art medium, and features 10 international CP artists, of which Graham is the only UK representative, within its monthly 'Portfolio' section.

One of the other UKCPS artists featured is Ann Kulberg, the well-known American artist, and authoress of some excellant books on colour pencil art.

This gorgeous picture will have all members of the UKCPS pushing it in the next few weeks and months. Why? Because it is the only successful entrant into the CPSA Exhibition from a UKCPS member based this side of the pond - and I had to be careful how I phrased that as I did not want to all of a sudden annex Ireland! Many congratulations to Julie Douglas of County Clare, Eire, for achieving this year what so many have tried and failed over the past seven years, and at least we now have a toehold in the CPSA competition!

Other news: I have put up a fairly comprehensive Frequently Asked Questions guide to the UKCPS Exhibition, with what I hope are some pointers especially for overseas entrants. Please read this carefully if you are thinking - as I hope you are - of entering this year. We are trying to spot problems before they arise, which is something of a new approach for your Executive!

And finally, I hope you enjoyed my latest article in Leisure Painter magazine, in the current (June 2008) edition, encouraging you to work on different papers. I actually had a telephone call this morning from a gentleman who said "I didn't know you were such a fine figure of a man!"

Richard Childs, "Hope of Sepilok"

Several short pieces in this blog. Let us start with several big congratulatory cheers, with possibly more to come! First, for members Richard Childs and Jonathan Newey, who have both been accepted into the Mall Galleries Exhibition for the Wildlife Artist of the Year, run by the David Sheppard Wildlife Foundation, between 24th and 28th June this year. The final winner will be announced on the Preview Evening - we are keeping our fingers crossed for both members. Richard's piece is "Hope of Sepilok", which was a prizewinner in the 2008 UKCPS Exhibition, and which has been instrumental in raising a good sum for the Orang-utans in Borneo.

Next, congratulations to member Graham Brace, who has a five page article in this month's (May) Artist and Illustrator magazine, with several examples of his beautiful work. Also in this magazine is a reference to the UKCPS Colour Comparison Charts, so we hope for more orders of those.

Next, a request from one of our members, Karen Coulson, to publicise her local art shop, which, despite the name, is in Lymington, Hants! Happy to do so, on recommendation of our members. This very friendly store may soon be stocking the new Luminance pencils from Caran d'Ache that are causing a stir at the moment, but it already has a good stock of Derwent and Caran d'Ache as well as some harder to find papers like the Art Spectrum Colorfix. While on the subject of members recommendations, if we have any members in North Queensland, Australia - and yes, we do have some in the Antipodes! - they might be interested in contacting Frieda van Aller to talk about visiting artists in the Port Douglas region.

Finally, if you have not already done so, get this book. Arlene Steinberg, known to many of us through "Scribbletalk", has written what I feel sure will become a standard in the coloured pencil world. I received my copy yesterday, and devoured it in one sitting, and am now going through it again to savour it. The best way I can sum it up is to say that Arlene does not just teach you how to become a coloured pencil artist - she shows you how to be an artist. And remember if you buy this book through the Society Book page, we benefit by a few pennies - which we can do with!

6th Annual "World of Coloured Pencil" Exhibition - call for entries

Apologies for the lateness of this post - Blogger has had problems today. This is to announce that entries are now open to our members for the 6th Annual "World of Coloured Pencil" Exhibition, held each year at the Cumberland Pencil Museum, Keswick, the home of Derwent pencils.

This is an exhibition designed to show the wide range of abilities and ways of using coloured pencils that exist within the Society, so is open to UKCPS members only. It is not a juried exhibition, and, due to the size of the Gallery, it is limited to 24 pictures. The first 24 entries received with postmarks after today's date, March 8th, will be hung, provided they do not exceed 70cm in any direction measured to the outside of the frame. Only one entry is allowed per member, and pictures previously shown in any other UKCPS exhibition are ineligible. All members have received entry forms with their edition of Talking Point, and should remember that they are to disregard Condition 1 on this form as stated in yesterdays blog. Other media may be used with coloured pencil, as long as coloured pencils form the main medium.

If any overseas members have not yet received a form and wish to enter, please contact our Secretary urgently and she will e-mail you one to be e-mailed back.

Closing date for entries is 16th April 2008. The exhibition will be shown from 1st to 28th June, and a range of prizes will be available, up to the £150 Best in Show. Leisure Painter magazine have again generously agreed to sponsor a "Best Newcomer" award, with a two year subscription to Leisure Painter magazine. There will also be a "Peoples Vote" prize. Previous prizewinners and entries can be seen on the UKCPS Exhibition pages.
