"Moments in Time"

  For the first time ever (despite having been together for almost 40 years!),
Malcom Cudmore and his wife Lorry are having a joint exhibition at
The Fisher Theatre in Bungay.

Starting with an evening opening on Tuesday 20th May it runs through to the end of Saturday 14th June, the exhibition will feature Lorry's ceramics, most of Malcom's large coloured pencil paintings on wooden panels and a few smaller works including the framed
"epic" Bungay Panorama picture

which won the UKCPS President's award
at the UK Coloured Pencil Society 2014 Open International Exhibition.

If you can't make it to the opening night, the exhibition is open from 10.00 am to 3.00 pm Monday to Saturday and from 6.00 pm on days when there is an event in the theatre. The Fisher Theatre is a well used, multi-use venue and occasionally the gallery is used for meetings and not open for viewing - so it is always worth checking (especially if you are travelling any distance) that the exhibition is fully open before you make a special journey.

This year, Malcom was accepted as a member of the Harleston and Waveney Art Trail, a collective of 40 independent professional artists all living within roughly a 10 mile radius of the Suffolk town of Harleston on the Norfolk/Suffolk border.

He  shall be hosting his open studio" at home
over the bank holiday weekend of 24th-26th May
and the following weekend 31st May/1st June.

UKCPS Dales Local Group

UKCPS Dales Local Group are holding a joint exhibition at the Blue Light Gallery, Little Market Place, Masham, North Yorkshire, HG4 4DY, from Saturday 31st May to Friday 27th June, 2014. The members exhibiting are Lesley Sharman UKCPS, Amy Horton UKCPS, Tony Brown, Maureen Oates and Niki Firmin.

There will be around 50 CP/mixed media pictures on show and for sale, as well as some "crafty" items they have produced.

Leeds exhibition

Members within reasonable travelling distance of Leeds may be interested in the annual exhibition held by St Gemmas Hospice. This years exhibition is Thurs 24th Oct – Sun27th Oct. It is held at Leeds Grammar School Alwoodley. Fairly large exhibition – the charge per item is £6.50 + commission and it is usually well attended.

 

The exhibition normally hosts over 800 entries. Entries can be made online.

Visitors Choice at Irby, Wirral

'On Duty'

It's nice to see colour pencil works getting the awards - and this picture entitled 'On Duty' was voted the best picture from 250 entrants at the Irby Artists Association Spring Exhibition last Saturday.

The Artist? -- former 'Talking Point' editor, Ann Holden.

Ann has who unfortunately had to leave the society temporarily while she studies to qualify as a medical artist, but will no doubt return in due course.

NEWA - Nat. Exhibition of Wildlife Art

I am aware that a number of UKCPS members submit pictures to the annual NEWA exhibition at Gordale Nursery, on the Wirral.  The following statement has been issued by the organisers:

National Exhibition Wildlife Art 2012

NEWA has been running very successfully for many years, but the time has come to rethink the administration and financing of the exhibition. We have endeavoured to do this without changing the original concept, which was to keep the fees for the artists as low as possible, to bring examples of excellent wildlife art from amateur and professional artists to the north of England, and to raise awareness of the natural environment.

We hope that we have achieved this but we need your help.

Please fill in your Application Forms on line, if possible. This will greatly assist the admin team. It is very easy to follow the simple directions, but help is just a phone call away if needed. You will be sent an email as soon as you have submitted your form. This will give you your own personal number which you can enter in the specified box on the home page at any time, up to delivery, and change your forms. You will also be able to download your labels for pictures, labels for packaging, your receipt of pictures, invitations for your buyers and fliers to help advertise the exhibition. Payment does not necessarily have to be done online. We will also accept payment by cheque or card.

NEWA has not changed – we are still trying to show the best of your work to as many buyers as possible, but we are aiming to be more efficient in these challenging times.

Brian Ainsworth - NEWA Exhibition

Congratulations to UKCPS member, Brian Ainsworth, for getting three of his drawings accepted into the annual National Exhibition of Wildlife Art at the Gordale Garden Centre, on the Wirral.
Gordale, one fthe largest garden centres on the Wirral, have been hosting this exhibition for a number of years, and its popularity grows year on year.  This year there are over 400 wildlife pictures and craft on display, and as someone who attends every year, I can vouch for the excellence of  the exhibition which features exhibits from many top UK artists.
The exhibition runs from 15th July til Sunday 31 July, and is open from 9.30 to 6pm each day.  Admission is free.

UKCPS Awardwinner in "Simply the Best" exhibition at NEC

Sue Clinker has had a coloured pencil picture accepted for the 'Simply the Best' Competition which will be exhibited at the Art Materials Live event at the NEC in Birmingham - where UKCPS also has a stand this week (4th - 7th November 2010).

The competition is sponsored by the Leisure Painter and The Artist magazines.  30 finalists have been selected to have their work exhibited at the show where visitors will vote for a 'People's Winner' and the works will be featured in Leisure Painter magazine in 2011.

This was my first attempt at a 'human' using coloured pencils back in 2008 and I can see lots of things I'd do differently now ... but we never stop learning do we? 

My picture is 'Old Blue Eyes' (attached) which was awarded Reserve Best in Show at the UKCPS World of Coloured Pencil exhibition (Cumberland 2008) - it was entitled 'Eye of the Beholder' then.

UKCPS member Janie Pirie wrote to me this week to let fellow UKCPS members know about the coloured pencil work at the Annual Exhibition of the Society of Botanical Artists at Central Hall, Westminster (in Storey's Gate opposite Westminster Abbey).

The exhibition continues until 25th April and is open every day 10.00 to 5.00pm

I had a good look around at the exhibition and there were some beautiful pieces of work in coloured pencil. We really are growing as more and more people realise that you can ‘paint’ with pencils and they have a wonderful quality and a depth of colour that can bring a piece of work to life. Out of the 700 paintings hung 59 of them were coloured pencil only and several others were a mixture of coloured pencil and another medium.

Janie was also very pleased to be able to announce that one of her pieces of work was awarded a Certificate of Botanical Merit. You can see this image above.

These are not handed out lightly so I was thrilled to get one. The piece of work was a Quince on the bough, the blossom and the disected fruit.

This week, I'll also be highlighting Ann Swan's new book Botanical Portraits with Colored Pencils which also includes Janie's Cascading Cherries picture in the gallery of coloured pencil artwork at the back of the book.

Ann Swan will be demonstrating at the exhibition on Tuesday 20th April.

Well known coloured pencil tutor and RHS gold medal winning botanical artist Ann Swan currently has her coloured pencil work in an exhibition at Fulham Palace in London. Ann told UKCPS  

It's a huge honour for me and for coloured pencil work to be hung alongside some of the greatest botanical artists of our time.

The exhibition continues until just after Easter.

Susan Goodall promotes coloured pencil art in Whitby

The UKCPS Blog is always pleased to highlight the initiatives of individual members in promoting the coloured pencil cause!

Susan Goodall, a UKCPS member living in Whitby in North Yorkshire, displayed her work and spent 10 days demonstrating how to draw using coloured pencils at her local tourist centre in December. Susan's particular interest is in finding new ways to work a medium and consequently she chose to demonstrate colour pencil work on velour paper.

As Susan explains, as well as providing her with some personal benefits, her marketing project has helped to generate interest in membership of the UKCPS.

I have publicised the event in my local newspaper, and have had lots of interest, and given out lots of UKCPS forms. So far I have two people interested in commissioning me for work, a request from the a writer on the local newspaper to do a days art tuition for her and she will do a full page spread with pictures on her days experience, an invite to demonstrate my cp work at the local art society meeting, and an invite to have a stand at a local Rotary Club Fair day.

Marion Brown exhibits with EAC Over 60s Art Awards

Marion Brown's coloured pencil work Peaches has been selected for the 2009 EAC Over 60s Art Awards. The Awards celebrate the talent and creativity of amateur artists who are between the ages of 60 and over 100, and who work in any genre.

Over 2,150 entries were received for the 2009 entry giving this national art competition one of the largest competitive entries in the UK! Only 101 works were chosen giving artists who entered less than 5% chance of being selected - but that's very much on a par with some of national competitions offering major awards!

However the emphasis of the awards is very much on the creativity of older people.

The EAC Over 60s Art Awards were founded by volunteers almost 15 years ago, with the aim of celebrating the creativity of older amateur artists. They are not about winning and losing. Though artists like to have their work exhibited in a London gallery, or receive a prize, all the feedback suggests that that really doesn’t matter. The real joy of the Awards is the unique opportunity they create for older people to demonstrate their continuing capacity to be purposeful and involved, and to enjoy the collaborative venture of entering a national competition.

The first round of judging was based on the submitted reproduced images of artists' work, either jpeg digital files or colour photographs (max A4 size).

Exhibition

Work selected for the exhibition was announced this month. 101 finalists’ works are included in the EAC Over 60s Art Awards exhibition at the Bankside Gallery, 48 Hopton Street, London, SE1 9JH, from 2nd - 6th December 2009.

Prizes will be announced and awarded at the Private View on 1st December.

See all the Art and Vote online

For the first time since the annual competition began in 1995, images of the finalists’ work have now been uploaded to the Art Awards website. This means that those unable to visit the exhibition can still participate, by viewing a ‘virtual exhibition’. They can also participate in the voting and commenting on their favourite entries.

The winning artist, calculated by overall number of points awarded by over the next three weeks, will receive a new prize, ‘The EAC People’s Choice Award’ at the prize-giving ceremony at the Bankside Gallery, on 1st December.

10 UKCPS members in South West Pencil Artists Exhibition

Last weekend four local UKCPS groups in the South and South West of England came together to stage an exhibition at the Old Mill Gallery, Worton, near Devizes.

10 UKCPS members from the local pencil groups based in Somerset, Bath, Romsey (Hampshire) and Devizes (Wiltshire) combined with a number of other pencil artists to hold the first South West Pencil Artists Exhibition comprising pencil art in both coloured pencils and/or graphite on 17th-19th July.

Bev Lewis sold one of her works 'Tortoiseshell on Pebbles' which has previously been exhibited at the very first UKCPS exhibition at Patchings. The exhibition generated a lot of interest and a great many visitors. A number of artists also sold prints and cards.

Members who organised the event enjoyed sharing their enthusiasm for coloured pencils with others. This is an extract from and a link to Pauline Longley's blog post about the exhibition.

The Gallery has lots of atmosphere and good lighting. There are about 100 pictures from 20 artists in a wide range of subjects; botanical, fur and feathers, landscapes, portraits, buildings and more.

Prior to the Private View on the Friday evening, Karen Coulson held a workshop on drawing animal's eyes in Pat Heffer's studio in Devizes, mainly for members of the beginners group run by Pat.

This group has booked Karen to do two further workshops - one in September (drawing a pheasant) and later in the year a whole day workshop (drawing a parrot).

Members can see Val Wilson's workshop drawings in her album in the UKCPS Yahoo group.

Pat was especially proud as 5 of her group for beginners also exhibited in the exhibition and one of them was the runner up in the public vote!

Coloured pencil art in Annual SOFA exhibition

Two of the works on the cover have been produced using coloured pencil.

Christmas Cat by UKCPS member Irina Garmashova SOFA is the largest work at 14" x 20 and has been produced using a combination of acrylic and coloured pencil on paper. Irina also has other coloured pencil artwork in the show.

The second work Meet the Kittens is by yours truly! It's 12" x 8" and is pure coloured pencils on Arches HP. I was officially flabbergasted yesterday when I was contacted by Gayle Mason who wanted to congratulate me on getting on the front cover! It's "the place to be" if you want to get your work noticed by the many feline art collectors who visit this very popular exhibition every year!

Other coloured pencil work in the brochure includes work by fellow UKCPS members:

• Margaret Edwards's I Can See You - coloured pencil on paper.

SOFA has a tradition of always giving coloured pencil artwork a prominent place in its exhibition. Founder member Anne Aggett SOFA has been drawing and exhibiting cats in coloured pencils for very many years.

The exhibition

The SOFA Annual Exhibition takes place in central London at the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in London (near Waterloo Station/opposite the Old Vic).

The exhibition dates this year are 28th August through to 18th September, (10am - 7.30pm Monday to Saturday).

The exhibition includes works by Full and Associate members of SOFA members. It will include approximately 300 paintings of cats in oil, acrylic, watercolour, pastel, coloured pencil and etchings and is the largest exhibition of feline art in the country. Prices range from £80 to £3,000 with the majority of working being under £750

Submission of artwork

Only Full Members and Associate Members of the Society of Feline Artists can submit artwork to the exhibition. Full membership is by selection only, after completing a year`s Associate Membership. Full members can exhibit up to six works and Associate members can submit up to four works.

Any UKCPS members interested in submitting work to SOFA can find out how to do this by reviewing the Associate Membership page on the SOFA website. You'll need to contact the membership secretary Sara Butt to find out if it's still possible to submit work for this year's exhibition.

The deadline for submitting work suitably framed to the gallery is Thursday 6th August between 10am and 4pm. This is a Gallery Exhibition and the selection of all work is done solely by the Gallery Director Jillian Llewellyn Lloyd. Please note, there is absolutely no guarantee of getting work selected. Also no matter how good the work an unsuitable frame can lead to a work being rejected.

Gayle can also advise on the process of applying to become a full member having achieved this status last year.

National Exhibition of Wildlife Art - selected artists announced

The organisers of the National Exhibition of Wildlife Art have selected the artists for their annual exhibition which runs from this Friday 17th July until Sunday 2nd August 2009. This is an excellent exhibition of wildlife art which has a very high quality and competitive entry.

This is the list of selected artists and, once again, UKCPS member Gayle Mason (Fur in the Paint) has been selected for this exhibition with two works accepted. I think this makes three years running for Gayle.

The online exhibition for this exhibition is always really excellent. If you would like to think about entering this exhibition next year you can see the nature of the work accepted on Friday when the online exhibition will go live. This is last year's online exhibition and I'll update this post when the 2009 online exhibition goes live.

One of the major advantages for artists who are successful in being selected for this exhibition is that it takes purchase orders online and always achieves very good sales.

Peter Woof in the 110th Annual Exhibition of The Pastel Society

Former UKCPS prizewinner Peter Woof ASGFA UKCPS has one of his works - Topiary Levens - currently on display in the 108th Annual Exhibition of The Pastel Society at the Mall Galleries in central London.

The exhibition continues until 3pm on Sunday 21st June 2009.

Coloured pencil artists and UKCPS members might like to note that the The Pastel Society accepts entries in: pastels, including oil pastels, charcoal, pencil, conté, sanguine or any dry media. Further details about the annual exhibition are available on the Pastel Society website and the Mall Galleries website

Art Education

Peter trained at the City & Guilds of London Art School then went on to a Postgraduate Course at the Royal Academy Schools, gaining his Royal Academy Certificate in 1981. He was awarded a prize in the 1980 Royal Academy Student show. He won the prize for Best Picture in Show at the Society of Graphic Fine Art annual exhibition in 2004.

Peter has exhibited at the Royal Academy, Mall Galleries and many other galleries in England and abroad. He now lives and works in Leamington Spa and is married with a son and a daughter.

His work today is definitely in the realist tradition. However from his earliest days he has been interested in abstract art particularly looking at the work of the American and St Ives schools and this way of thinking still informs his work today. He wants the picture as a whole to have an abstract strength and presence but also to be particular in detail.

Influences

One of the main influences of his work is Japanese art, Hiroshige and Hokusai to name just two of the many great artists. Their use of flat space, pattern and above all their sense of design. He sees picture making as much about design as looking.

Materials

He uses a mixture of Karisma and Derwent Artist pencils on 300lb NOT surface watercolour paper. He particularly likes the intense colour that can be acheived with the Karisma pencils.
