Talking Point!

Calling ALL members,
I am putting together a festive/seasonal issue for the next Talking Point and am needing you to send me your images ASAP.
This includes beginners and advanced alike so do not be shy! You should all be proud of your work as we are!
Email me your images to editor@... by the 30th November or I shall come looking for you ;)
One of these images will be chosen for cover artist so it is a great opportunity to get your work noticed.

MAC is located in Cannon Hill Park, Birmingham, opposite the County Cricket Ground on Edgbaston Road, off Pershore Road (A441) and Bristol Road. (A38). Free parking available in Queens Ride, Cannon Hill Park (owned by Birmingham City Council).  The Centre is served by a number of buses from Birmingham City Centre including 1, 35, 45, 47, 62 and 63.

Election to the Executive Committee The Chair, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Society stand for re-election at each AGM.  In addition, vacancies exist within the Executive Committee to which members can nominate themselves or others (with their consent).  Nomination forms can be obtained from the Secretary on receipt of a stamped & self-addressed envelope, or via email on request, and must be completed and returned by Friday 19 September 2014.

Constitution   A copy of the UKCPS Constitution can be obtained from the Secretary on receipt of a stamped & self addressed A4 envelope, or will be sent as a Msoft Word (.docx) file on request.

Peoples' Choice Award at Patchings

    There is still time to vote on line for the People's Choice Award for the Patchings Exhibition. Entries were made to either The Leisure Painter category, for beginners and amateurs, and The Artist category, for experienced amateur and professional artists. Seventy selected works from each category were chosen to be exhibited in two separate galleries at Patchings Art Centre, which are open until 20th July. In addition, 50 highly commended works in each category are featured in the on line exhibition. 

               When voting, there are four categories: The Artist, which is for pictures that were selected and hung at the exhibition, and the Artist Highly Commended (on line only); and Leisure Painter and Leisure Painter Highly Commended. You are only allowed one vote for the TA/TAHC category and one vote for the LP/LPHC category. 

UKCPS members in The Artist Highly Commended Gallery are:

Jo Goudie at NEWA

[See my previous Post]  I still haven't had a chance to get to the Gordale Garden Centre to view the exhibition, but UKCPS Silver member, Jo Goudie, has written to say that two of  her CP works (shown on the right) are also on show at the NEWA Exhibition.

Online newsletters

Members of UKCPS (particularly those overseas), who have not been in reciept of the society newsletter this year can now obtain copies in .pdf format by going to the UKCPS website (www.ukcps.co.uk) and clicking on the 'Members Log-in' link. Log-in, or get your log-in password if you have never used the facility before.

Ann Swan book competition winners

Pauline Longley and Lesley Sharman have both won a copy of Botanical Painting with Coloured Pencils by UKCPS member Ann Swan SBA GM in the competition which ran on this blog during May.

If you are a UKCPS member and you've not yet entered, it's not too late to win a copy as there is a separate competition with another two books being awarded to UKCPS members who are mailing their entries to Ann Holden, the Editor of Talking Point.  The details of BOTH competitions were set out in A competition for UKCPS members.

Once Pauline and Lesley have got their books and read them, they will both be writing a review of the book which will be published on this blog in September - just before the Annual Exhibition.  We'll find out how they rate it and what they found most helpful.

A competition for UKCPS members

Four copies of Botanical Painting with Coloured Pencils by UKCPS member Ann Swan SBA GM are the prizes in a new competition for UKCPS members ONLY.  The book was published last month by Harper Collins

The competition will run in two parts and two stages - on the UKCPS News blog (for the those who like their UKCPS news in a digital format) and in the pages of the June edition of the members' newsletter Talking Point for those who don't have a computer.

What you need to do to win a copy of Ann Swan's new book

The format for the competition is identical whichever route you choose to use to enter

• Tell us in no more than 30 words why you'd like to receive - and then review - Botanical Painting with Coloured Pencils
• The best responses will receive a book - two for digital entries via blog/email and two for paper entries via the newsletter/letter
• Once you've received the book we would then like the winners to submit a review for publication in either the blog or Talking Point. 
• The winners can review the book any way you like - how you do it is entirely up to you.  It can be as long or as short as you like; written on your blog or submitted via email or letter.  If you want to go the route of a short video we'd be fascinated to see what you come up with!

The UKCPS News/Talking Point Competition is limited to:

• UKCPS members only
• one entry per member.

PLEASE NOTE:  This competition is limited to paid-up UKCPS members only.  We'll be checking the membershp status of the proposed winners with the Membership Secretary before declaring the winners.

UKCPS News Blog competition

• The Blog Competition runs from 12th May to 31st May
• Submit your entry for the blog competition by email to the UKCPS Blogmaster. If you want to and you've chosen to highlight your entry on your blog you can leave a link in the comments of this blog
• The two winners will be the members who identify the best reason for receiving this book and/or the best proposal for how they will do a review
  
• The names of the two members who each win a book will be announced on this blog in the first week of June
• Harper Collins will despatch a book to each of the winners in June
• The winners are then asked to produce a review by mid August (although we can negotiate on dates if holidays get in the way!)
  
• The reviews by the two winners will be posted on the blog in September prior to exhibition.

Talking Point newsletter competition

• The Talking Point competition runs from 1st June to 30th June

• The two winners will be the members who identify the best reason for receiving this book and/or the best proposal for how they will do a review

UKCPS Annual General Meeting - 3rd October 2009

The UKCPS Annual General Meeting is on Saturday 3rd October 2009 and will follow the Annual Society Lunch.

Annual Society Lunch

The Annual Society Lunch takes place at Pasta di Piazza, 11 Brook Street, St Paul's Square, Birmingham B3 1SA on Saturday 3rd October at 12.15pm. Contact Pat Heffer if you wish to join the annual lunch as all seats need to be booked in advance.

Annual General Meeting

The UKCPS AGM will take place in Birmingham at St Paul's Church, (St Paul's Square, Birmingham B3 1SA) from 2pm until 4pm, after which the exhibition at the RBSA Gallery (4 Brook St Birmingham, West Midlands, B3 1SA) will be taken down.

Locations & directions - car/ rail/ walk

The RBSA website includes a "locate us" page. This provides details of where the gallery is (see RBSA locate map on right). and instructions for those coming by road or rail.

This is a link to a Google Map which indicates the locations of the RBSA Gallery, the restaurant, church and Birmingham New Street station.

You can use Street View to see what the area looks like. You can also use 'Get Directions' to find a suggested route - walking or by car - to St Paul's Square from a location of your choice.

Rail/Walking: Directions are provided on the RBSA Locate us page. The location of Birmingham New Street station is indicated on the Google Map.

Parking: The St Pauls Square area is an area of controlled parking with parking restrictions applying every day between 8am and 5pm. There are some 'pay at the machine' spaces. Local car parks are indicated on the map. Further details are available on the RBSA Locate us page

8th UKCPS Open International Exhibition - Call for Entries

Anyone, anywhere in the world, who likes to produce art using coloured pencils is invited to enter the 8th Open International Exhibition 2009 of the United Kingdom Coloured Pencil Society (UKCPS) sponsored by Derwent.

This annual exhibition will be held in 2009 in Gallery 2 at the home of the The Royal Birmingham Society of Artists in Birmingham from Monday 21st September to Saturday 3rd October.

ENTRY: What you need to know

Here are some of the important things you need to know:

• Who can enter? This is an open competition - which means you don't need to be a paid-up member of UKCPS to enter....
  
• ....however it you would like to try and earn signature status from UKCPS you'll need to become a member before you enter! Check out the details of how to do this on the membership page on the UKCPS website. If you are successful in getting into this show three times within a five year span you can become a signature member and are entitled to put the letters UKCPS after your name.
• if your work is accepted into the exhibition, you become eligible to win one or more of the valuable Awards: Derwent Award for Best in Show (£400), UKCPS Award for Reserve Best in Show (£300), the President's Award (£100), the Peter Weatherill Landscape Award (£100), the People's Choice Award (£50), among other awards.
• the entry form for this exhibition has been despatched to all members in the March edition of the Talking Point newsletter. You can also now download the combined Call For Entries and Entry Form (pdf file) from the NEW exhibition page on the UKCPS website.
  
• IMPORTANT: The criteria for eligible work has changed in 2009. As usual we suggest you should read ALL of the details given in the Call for Entries/Entry Form very carefully. However, this year, you are recommended to pay particular attention to the definition of eligible work which has changed from that used in previous years. Using your mouse, you can right click on the image below to see the relevant part of the form - which states very clearly what sort of work is eligible to enter and what would make a work ineligible for the competition. Work which is submitted but ineligible will be refused entry.

Eligible Works: An extract from the Call For Entries

• to enter you need to submit a completed entry form plus image(s) (as a photo, print or high resolution scan on CD) by the deadline of 24th June to Pat Heffer, the UKCPS Exhibition Secretary
  
• Entry fees: These have also changed. As previously explained in Talking Point, every UKCPS member now gets one entry free and can submit up to 3 additional entries @ £5 per entry. The entry fee for all non-members is £17.50 each for up to 2 entries and as membership is £28 per annum for a UK member (and £33 for a non-UK member) you can see there's a slight financial incentive to joining UKCPS!
• Jury: A jury considers all images, plus the title and details of size. Artists' names, descriptions and CVs are not provided to jurors. The jurors this year are Vera Curnow CPSA (Founder of the Colored Pencil Society of America, author, editor and gallery owner), Paul Hipkiss RBSA of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and a representative of Derwent.
  
• Notification: Those accepted into the exhibition will be notified by 21st August 2009.

Happy New Year!

.....And a very productive one, to all of the UKCPS membership!

We start the New Year with some good news and some bad news. The good news is that we seem to have a few more volunteers for posts on the Executive, and, after Peter Weatherill has let the Christmas Turkey settled a bit and twisted a few arms a little higher up some peoples backs, we hope to be able to announce four additions to the Executive, initially in a job share/support role, but who knows where that might lead - we hope!

The bad news is just a reminder of what was decided at the AGM in October - subscription rates will rise this year for the first time since the Society was launched in 2002. The new rates, which will apply to anyone joining this year or renewing during the year, are:

• UK Resident Full member - £28
• UK Resident Assoc member - £20
• Add £5 to each of these for Overseas residency.

The new rates are now on the website, you can join from our membership page. We feel that with the increased postage costs, increased size of Talking Point, and increased fees for prestigious gallery space in 2008/9, the increased fees are both warranted and value for money. And we hope you agree!
