Rewarding excellence through showcasing the very best international works created in pencil, The Cumberland Pencil Company is delighted to announce their inaugural Derwent Art Prize.

 It is an open submission opportunity for British and international artists, offering prizes of up to £8,750.

Entries will be judged by a distinguished panel of selectors: Yvonne Crossley (Director
of The Drawing Gallery, Shropshire); Fisun Güner (journalist and freelance visual arts
writer); and Professor Stephen Farthing RA (artist and Rootstein Hopkins Research
Chair of Drawing at the University of the Arts, London).

'We are delighted to be invited to select works for this inaugural year of the Derwent Art
Prize. We look forward to seeing a high standard of entries and hope to bring together an
exhibition which showcases the very best works created in pencil, from both British and
international artists.'

An exhibition of selected works will be held at the prestigious Mall Galleries in
London SW1 from 16-21 September 2013 and all selected artists will be featured on
the Derwent Art Prize website.

 The Derwent Art Prize 2013 exhibition will then tour to venues across the UK, including the Pencil Museum in Keswick, Cumbria.

The Prize is open to all living British and international artists over the age of 18 years old on 1st July 2013. Artists can submit up to 6 pieces of work, created with any charcoal, pastel, graphite, water-soluble and coloured pencils on any 2 or 3 dimensional support. The maximum size of work is 182cms in its greatest dimension.

Award for Pencil Museum

The Cumberland Pencil Museum as been a regular venue for the UKCPS "World of Colour Pencils" exhibition held in the spring of each year, so it is nice to hear that they themselves have won a coveted award.  Congratulations from UKCPS!

The team at the Cumberland Pencil Museum are delighted to have received a Visitor Attraction Quality Assurance Award from Visit Britain.  Commenting on the Award, Alex Farthing, the Museum Manager, said "I am delighted for the team that we have received this Award as it recognises all their hard work constantly improving the visitor experience and ensuring we offer outstanding Customer Service at all times. The team always go that extra mile for our customers and this is reflected in some of the lovely comments we have received in our Visitors Book and on our feedback forms.  Also, this year  we have  further enhanced the visitor experience with the addition of an interactive video in our WW2 exhibition and a dressing up area for children which all help to bring our stories to life".

The Pencil Museum was only awarded the Quality Rose marquee after it had been rigorously mystery shopped by one of Visit Britain’s independent assessors.

Congratulations to Alan Jones,  whose picture  entitled 'Meggie' [see right] was voted most popular by visitors to the 2012 World of Colour Pencils' exhibition at the Cumberland Pencil Museum in Keswick.

UKCPS Exec Committee at Derwent

That bunch of rogues shown on the right is made up of some of the members of the UKCPS Executive Committee, (plus some of their partners), when they were guests of the Derwent Cumberland Pencil Company at the factory in Lillyshall, near Workington, on Friday last.   The Exec. Comm. were invited to tour the factory as part of a two day visit to Keswick during which the committee met to conduct UKCPS business, and to set up the entries for the 'World of Colour Pencils' exhibition at the Cumberland Pencil Museum. (the results of which will follow in a further posting).

Alan Jones - Derwent Logo Winner

Derwent Pencils are delighted to announce the winner of their recent 'Decorate Derwent' competition. Entrants were invited to embellish the Derwent logo in any way they wanted, and to let their imaginations run wild.

We are pleased to announce that the winning design came from UKCPS member, Alan Jones.

The design, shown on the right, will be used by Derwent as their profile picture on Facebook and Twitter, and will feature in magazine advertisements.

Pencil Museum - New website!

In line with it's 30th birthday celebrations, the Pencil Museum in Keswick has launched a new website (http://www.pencilmuseum.co.uk/) .

The new site is more user friendly, and features details of all the forthcoming fun days, events, and drawing demonstrations at the museum, plus a range of downloadable projects and drawing templates with a special emphasis on children's activities.

One of the new additions to the list of well-known artists demonstrating at the museum will be UKCPS member, Ann Swan, one of the country's leading botanical artists.

The birthday celebrations are a two day event over the 29th/ 30th May, and UKCPS will feature in the celebrations with the 'World of Coloured Pencils' exhibition which will be on display at the museum from 28 May to 25 June 2011. You will also have a chance to meet fellow members who will be present during the celebration weekend.

Derwent - & the royal wedding!

To celebrate the wedding of HRH Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Cumberland Pencil Co. has produced a special presentation box called 'The Majestic'. It's a limited edition of only 500, of which No.1 has been given to the happy couple as a wedding gift.

Made from Maple with a Walnut veneer, the box is filled with a selection of water-soluble pencils and blocks, together with a range of accessories. To mark the occasion, Derwent has commissioned artist Angela Gaughan-Owens to draw a portrait of the wedding couple using the pencils featured in the box. A reproduction of the portrait is included within the box, and the original will be on display at the Pencil Museum in Keswick.

Call for Entries - 'World of Coloured Pencil'

UKCPS members will wish to note that the entry form, plus conditions of entry, for this year's 'World of Coloured Pencil' Exhibition at the Cumberland Pencil Museum in Keswick, are available online via the "Upcoming Events" link on the UKCPS website, or use the address: www.ukcps.co.uk/keswick_2011/ . Entry forms will be circulated to members in the next edition of Talking Point which is due out by the end of March.The deadline for entries, originally set for 9th April, has now been put back until 23rd April 2011.

The Exhibition runs from Saturday 28 May to Saturday 25 June 2011, and the start coincides with the Pencil Museum's own 30 year anniversary event. A special prize is on offer from the Museum for a best picture with a 1980's theme. Derwent Pencils will be awarding 'Best in Show' and 'People's Award', Leisure Painter Magazine are awarding for the 'Best Newcomer to Coloured Pencils', and UKCPS will be awarding for Reserve Best, Runner Up, and for the 'Best Local Group Member'.

The Pencil Museum's own celebratory event is being held over Sunday and Monday 29th/30th May, and will include free artists demonstrations and workshops, competitions, raffles, and childrens activities, with limited edition Derwent products available.

The Derwent Award for ‘Best in Show’

Abergynolwyn has the most lovely waterfalls, reached by the train from Tywyn in Wales. The small steam train calls at several beautiful stops en route, Abergynolwyn being the last in the line. There was almost 2 hours to walk and take photos before the return journey. This picture is from my favourite photo. I wanted to try out my Coloursoft pencils and also to experiment on black Stonehenge paper. The waterfall seemed to be a picture that might work well on black Stonehenge—and I was happy with my choice of subject. I used Derwent Watercolour white for the highlights.

The Best in Show prize donated by Derwent comprises:  Wooden presentation box of 72 Derwent Inktense pencils, Wooden presentation box of 48 of the new Derwent Pastel pencils, Box of 6 Coloursoft Portrait pencils, Box of 6 Derwent Sketching pencils, A4 hardback sketchbook, Museum Notebook and pen, Derwent Helical Battery Pencil Sharpener, and a booklet on the History of Pencil Making in Keswick.

Unlike the Annual Open International Exhibition, the "World of Coloured Pencils" is a members only exhibition where the work exhibited is selected by ballot making this exhibition much more representational of the range of abilities within the Society, from beginners to professionals.  Artists can also use other media for their enytries so long as coloured pencils are the main medium.

A World of Coloured Pencil opens in Keswick

The 8th 'A World of Coloured Pencil' Mixed Media Competition 2010, sponsored by Derwent Pencils, opened on 30th May and runs until 26th June at the The Cumberland Pencil Museum, Keswick, CA12 5NG

This is a members only exhibition.  This year was the first time that work chosen was selected by ballot - with the first 24 selected from the ballot being shown.  This means that it reflects, much more than our main exhibition, the range of abilities within the Society, from beginners to professionals.  In this exhibition, pictures can be pure coloured pencil, or may use other media as long as coloured pencils are the main medium.

We now have photos of the exhibition courtesy of Sylvia Richards, the wife of Dave Richards who organised the hanging at the weekend!  I'm sure you will agree it looks splendid.

Judging was delayed so we're waiting to hear who are the prizewinners are and I'll be posting again about the artwork which won prizes - and who created it - as soon as we have the names.

Finally I would very much thank all those who entered and was very sorry we cannot hang them all. The space regretably is very limited, and we took the chance to reassess this whilst at Keswick and feel 24 is the maximum. It is again an exhibition of very high standard, the numbers participating in cp is growing and standards are rising. It was great to have 7 newcomers included and sign that the society is catering for the needs of all abilities.

Tip for next year - do NOT send your work before the first date for posting. Some entries were eliminated this year because they arrived too soon! The works accepted from UKCPS members only are literally the first 24 entries received AFTER the specified date.

Derwent kindly host the Annual 'World of Coloured Pencils' exhibition at the The Cumberland Pencil Museum in Keswick each year and the exhibition is judged by Derwent staff at the Museum. UKCPS would specially like to thank Alex Spencer, the Museum Manager and Kath Thompson who led on judging this year's entries.

Dave commented

I would like to include a thank you to the judges and staff for their hospitality, as we always receive such a warm welcome from all the staff at the museum. We're also very pleased to highlight Derwent's continued help and generosity in hosting the event every year and providing such super prizes.

There's lots to see at the Museum besides the Exhibition - you can see what's on at the museum events page for June.

The exhibition is turning out to be a real talking point with the customers visiting the Museum.

Leisure Painters Magazine

UKCPS would also like to thank the Leisure Painters Magazine for providing the prize of two years subscription to the magazine for our Best Newcomer.

The volunteers

An exhibition always takes a long time to organise and then often has to move very fast at the end in terms of transporting work, getting it hung and communicating about it. As with all UKCPS activities, nothing happens or moves without the involvement of the people who volunteer their help in an official capacity, as a member - and even as a spouse or partner of a member!

The two principal people who are involved in organising the show are Pat Heffer, the UKCPS Exhibitions Secretary and Dave Richards whose principal responsibility is organising this show. They are both supported by a number of members and members' partners.

Here's what Dave had to tell me about the contribution made by the volunteers.

The helpers were wonderful as always and we could not manage without them, in collecting pictures and transporting them to Keswick, unwrapping and hanging. It is wonderful to have so many experienced eyes to settle on the final arrangement, although it does mean numerous picture movements which can very often be reversed and changed again. This can get a bit fraught but we always have great fun and it is a good social occasion for all including those members who join in on the day.

I would add my congratulations to all the winners. I have never come near getting an award personally but it is always a thrill to have a picture in this exhibition.

It should be noted that Dave didn't enter a picture this year as there were so many entries for this exhibition!

Finally a special mention for Liz Ridley, the UKCPS webmaster who remained wonderfully unflappable when a serious power failure near her home meant she lost all access to broadband for an unknown length of time while they dug up the road - just as she was about start posting all the competition entries to the UKCPS website!
